Released by Sony's Legacy division in 2014, Original Album Classics offers a compact bundling of Teddy Pendergrass' first five solo albums, all of which were originally released by Philadelphia International. This contains Teddy Pendergrass (1977), Life Is a Song Worth Singing (1978), Teddy (1979), TP (1980), and It's Time for Love (1981) -- all Top Ten R&B albums, and all platinum, with the exception of the fifth release, which merely went gold. When this was issued, it retailed for roughly the same amount as a double-disc anthology -- a reasonably priced way to obtain a major chunk of the great Philly soul singer's catalog.

Since the first volume of Blaxploitation used most of the obvious picks for this kind of compilation, the compilers of this volume are left free to make plenty of fresh choices. As a result, Blaxploitation, Vol. 2: The Sequel boasts plenty of enticing rarities like "Let's Clean Up the Ghetto" by the Philadelphia All-Stars, a funky message tune voiced by a collection of the stars from the Philadelphia-International label (including Lou Rawls and Teddy Pendergrass). Another fine rarity is the album-length version of the Temptations' classic "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone": At 11-plus minutes, this slickly orchestrated slice of ghetto realism plays out like an urban symphony.

Genre: Jazz, Funk / Soul | Label: Vocalion | Catalog Number: CDSML 8506

Recorded for Mercury in 1976, the Nightflight sessions saw Szabo travelling to Philadelphia's Sigma Sound Studios to make an album indebted to the funky, soulful music of the legendary Philadelphia International Records home to such artists as Teddy Pendergrass, Lou Rawls, Billy Paul, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, The Three Degrees and The O'Jays. Deepening Nightflight's links to The Philadelphia Sound were the musicians accompanying Szabo. The rhythm section comprised members of Instant Funk a group who appeared on many Philadelphia International recordings alongside various studio players, among them keyboardist-composer Dexter Wansel and guitarist-pianist-singer Bunny Sigler who also produced the sessions. The result is a colourful fusion of lush soul music with Szabo's distinctive brand of jazz guitar.
