Susan Ung (Viola), Clay Ellerbroek (Flute (Alto)), Elena Mashkovtseva (Harp), Charles Wells (Piano)

The compositions of Cambodian native Chinary Ung (b. 1942) display mixed elements of European, Asian, and Western musics. ...Ung's music sounds very improvised even though it is written, but the variations of texture and timbre allowed give it the flavor and elements of spontaneous composition. ...The deeper viola sounds on Khse Buon, which was initially written for cello, are exploited by Susan Ung, as she patiently constructs long tones strung together with plucked, percussion inserts; spirited; choppy or spare sounds; and yearning East Indian or Koto-like sounds with Arabic legato.

Following her first three albums, all of which were wildly eclectic affairs, Bonnie Raitt was poised for a mainstream move, and 1974's Streetlights is it. There's no blues edge here whatsoever, and Raitt's guitar playing is subdued--both detractions--but the album also introduces "Angel from Montgomery," the definitive version of John Prine's piercing ballad. Raitt dips further into contemporary singer-songwriter fare with Joni Mitchell's "That Song About the Midway" and James Taylor's "Rainy Day Man," but the album peaks with Allen Toussaint's thoughtful (and funky) "What Is Success."

One has to wonder why this box, Joni Mitchell's The Studio Albums 1968-1979, was issued only in the European market. During this period --and some would argue even after -- Mitchell had one of most consistent quality runs in pop history. She is one of the most influential songwriters and recording artists of the 20th century...

Beyond Boundaries is seemingly a concept album which I can only interpret as being about our perceptions and awareness of life and our relationships to it. Our perceptions of ourselves, our lives, and our world, and our relationships with those we love, and with everyone around us, as well as with nature and life in general...

The sad fact about box sets is that there's always a fan out there who thinks they could have compiled a better one. An even sadder fact is that they're often correct, and the very notion of anthologizing Van Der Graaf Generator was a fraught one for that very reason. More, perhaps, than any other band of the early-'70s prog era, VDGG polarized their fans as much as the band's blatantly inhospitable sound outraged outsiders. They cut just eight studio albums, and all eight possess a wholly different character, all the more so since the band actually broke up midway through the sequence. Past compilations, then, sensibly dealt with one or other of those eras – The Box, contrarily, swallows the entire beast whole, 34 tracks over four stuffed discs, and it gets full marks for courage, whatever its other sins may be. …

The Gods were an English group founded in 1965. They are probably better known for including a few famous British rock stars as members -- before those musicians went on to international recognition -- than they are for the two albums they actually released. Two future Uriah Heep stalwarts, keyboardist/singer Ken Hensley and drummer Lee Kerslake, both played on those albums, and prior to the first Gods band album, both Mick Taylor and Greg Lake had passed through the lineup. The two Gods albums were undistinguished, keyboard-based rock that were midway between late-'60s British pop-psychedelia and early-'70s heavy progressive rock. This Japanese reissue 2009 contains the albums "Genesis" and "To Samuel A Son" featuring the original design and includes the bonus tracks. Details

These two 1960 releases offer an ingenious mixture--swinging Latin rhythms popular in the late '50s and early '60s, and the rhythmical perfection of Peggy Lee. When these songs were recorded, Lee was already the toast of the world. Having proved herself early on in the Benny Goodman orchestra she then started writing her own songs, raked in hit after hit, and became a celebrated actress. It seems appropriate that the selection of songs from "Ole Ala Lee!" should be favorites from the musical theater.
