2009 import-only three CD set from the British Folk Rock institution. Subtitled: A Parcel of Steeleye Span. Their First Five Chrysalis Albums - 1972-1975, this triple disc set contains the entirety of their first five albums for the Chrysalis Records label (from 1972's Below The Salt to 1975's All Around My Hat) with a few bonus tracks thrown in for good measure. Steeleye Span are so well entrenched in the annals of folk history that it is sometimes easy to forget that, for two or three years in the middle of the 1970s, they were likewise poised on the very brink of mainstream rock superstardom. Even with a career that has brought us an incredible twenty-one studio albums, British folk legends Steeleye Span’s history still includes a number of records that stand out as landmarks. 1974’s Now We Are Six was one such moment, an album that saw the band expand both their line up to a six piece and with it their sound to explore even further their own unique blend of rock and folk music. A critical and commercial success, the record would provide a home to a number of band classics down the years. Details

The biggest selling of all Steeleye Span albums is also their hardest rocking record. They sound like would-be competitors to the Who on the opening bars of "The Wife of Usher's Well," with Bob Johnson's electric guitar grinding out power chords like nobody's business. The vocals have their usual elegance, the harmonies soaring exquisitely, but between the choruses the guitar puts out lots of wattage. Details

Excellent addition to any rock music collection.
Steeleye Span's third album "Ten Man Mop Or Mr. Reservoir Butler Rides Again" from 1971 is the only seventies album by this group I do not have in my collection. Here contribute Maddy Prior(vocals, spoons, tabor), Tim Hart (organ, dulcimer, banjo, guitar, mandolin, vocals), Peter Knight (fiddle, mandolin, violin, tympani, tenor banjo, keyboard, vocals), Martin Carthy (organ, guitar, vocals) and Ashley Hutchings (bass). They had no drummer and that is something I like with early Steeleye Span.

Lark in the Morning: The Early Years is a mid-priced, two-disc rendering of the band's first three records. Remastered for the first time, Hark! the Village Wait, Please to See the King, and Ten Man Mop are featured in their entirety, and in their original sequence, making this an absolute necessity for fans, and a perfect entry point for the uninitiated. Steeleye Span are masters of arrangement, and nowhere is that more evident than on their debut. Though familial tension ran high during its recording, Hark! the Village Wait yielded some of the most agreeable tunes the band ever laid to tape. Details

Essential: a masterpiece of prog-folk music
The same Steeleye Span lineup that produced their best album up to that point, "Below the Salt", was back for another run, even bolder and more in-your-face.
As with its predecessor, filler is kept to a minimum, with the weakest parts continuing to be those that are subject to least amplification and rearrangement, such as "The Ups and Downs", in which this lineup proves it cannot handle the silly singalong as well as its progenitors, even if it is in every other way superior. Instrumentals were rarely their forte, and this trend continues with the thankfully short "Robbery with Violins".

When Steeleye Span released their 1996 album 'Time', it was a landmark for a number of reasons. Inspired by their epic 25th anniversary show in London, it not only saw the band return to recording after a seven year break but was the first release to feature vocalists Maddy Prior and Gay Woods since their ground breaking 1969 debut Hark! The Village Wait. It was also their first album with the Oxford based Park Records, an association that has been maintained for nearly twenty years. Details
