Marcello Benedetto - 12 Concerti Grossi Op. 1 (Silvano Frontalini, Kaunas Chamber Orchestra) [2000]
EAC Rip | FLAC, IMG+CUE, LOG | Scans | 2cd, 529.48 MB
Classical | Label: Bongiovanni | Catalog Number: GB 5550/51-2

Wherever the Kaunas Chamber Orchestra comes from, they are excellent in the Baroque repertory -- possessing a fine sense of nobilmente mixed with a lively sense of rhythm. The Marcello Concert Grossi may not be quite as fine as Corelli's or Handel's opp. 6, but it is certainly the equal of Torelli's op. 8, Avison's Scarlatti-inspired or Geminiani's opp. 2-5. Give it a try; you won't be disappointed by the sound as indicated by another reviewer.

Founded in Padua in 1959 by Claudio Scimone, it has made a reputation especially with Italian Baroque music, recording many works by Antonio Vivaldi, Tomaso Albinoni, Francesco Geminiani, Benedetto Marcello and Giuseppe Tartini. Giuliano Carmignola and Piero Toso were two of the soloists in the ensemble. The group has made over 300 recordings, many on the Erato record label. A number of these were first-ever recordings of works of Vivaldi, Albinoni and Rossini.

Benedetto Marcello was born into a prominent family of Venetian merchants and politicians. Although Benedetto was destined to become a lawyer (due to his father's objections to his musical aspirations), he had great natural gifts for music, and studied under Antonio Lotti and Francesco Gasparini. This CD set is a compilation of two earlier releases, performed on authentic instruments, which have earned exceptional reviews.

Born in Venice, Benedetto Marcello was a member of a noble family and his compositions are frequently referred to as Patrizio Veneto. Benedetto Marcello was the brother of Alessandro Marcello (1669-1747), also a composer of some note. Marcello composed a diversity of music including considerable church music, oratorios, hundreds of solo cantatas, duets, sonatas, concertos and sinfonias. Marcello was a younger contemporary of Antonio Vivaldi in Venice and his instrumental music enjoys a Vivaldian flavor.
