Japans most famous Jazz pianist, Makoto Ozone, releases My Witch's Blue with the Makoto Ozone Trio. Makoto Ozone Trio features Christian McBride & Jeff Tain Watts.A soft Makoto that highlights the tone and the melody. There are also some upbeat that will take you away for a ride. But the main story here is a gentle Makoto Ozone with lovely intepretations of a well balanced bunch of tunes. Hank Jones is the name that comes to my mind if I have to compare his tone with someone. The rythm section is the best you can get and they do it.

Pianist Makoto Ozone, who was a member of Gary Burton's group at the time, invited the great vibraphonist to his recording debut as a leader, a trio outing with bassist Eddie Gomez. 23 at the time, Ozone already had impressive technique and a generally introspective style that meshed well with Burton. The groups performs five of Ozone's originals (including the two-part "Endless Season"), and even if the results are sometimes a bit sleepy, the pianist does show a lot of potential.

Reissue with the latest DSD remastering. Comes with liner notes. 1. I believe this was Makoto's 3rd album (something like that) and when it came out, I was expecting some more inventive Makoto magic--> but I was surprised to learn / hear that this was standard jazz material and I totally loved it. 2. This was produced before trio jazz stuff came back into fashion (ie prior to Chick's Acoustic Band and around the time of Keith Jarrett's trio... I think Keith had his first live trio album around this time). Anyway, the trio work is great, the song selection is classic, this is a no brainer for anyone who appreciates good / classic standard jazz.

What happens when the piercing sound of the kabuki Flute meets wistful Slavic Dumka?
HAIKU is an attempt to find a common ground for Polish and Japanese musical traditions. It is a joint project created by AMJ and Makoto Ozone. There have been legends circulating about how the two had met. But the truth is that Ozone heard AMJ’s concert at Tokyo’s Blue Note and was so impressed he asked her to perform parts on his album ‘Road to Chopin’. The recording session lasted 4 minutes, one take (AMJ did not even take her coat off). Once the very last chord of this song rang, they both knew that there is a metaphysical bond of understanding between them, unusual unity in music that is often only imagined after years of collaboration.
