2010 three CD set that contains their first five albums for Liberty Records (1968-72) plus bonus tracks. With a career that spans an impressive five decades, the Groundhogs are a veritable British Blues-Rock institution. With a line-up cemented around Peter Cruickshank on bass guitar, Ken Pustelnik on drums and fronted by singer, guitarist and principle songwriter Tony (T.S.) McPhee, this bluesy power trio were joined by harmonica toting Steve Rye for their full length debut, Scratching The Surface released on Liberty Records in 1968. With a reputation hard won by their incessant touring schedule, the band recorded Blues Obituary as a three piece in 1969, followed by Thanks Christ For The Bomb (1970), then hitting #5 with their most successful record, Split, in 1971 and rounded off by the fabulously titled Who Will Save The World? The Mighty Groundhogs (1972).

"Hogwash" falls somewhere in between the Groundhogs' raw, blues-meets-electric rock sound of the late '60s and early '70s, and the less enthusiastic material that followed. It initiates more of a fundamental prog rock sound, with Tony McPhee's guitar work (along with a smattering of keyboard bits) taking on some well-maintained aggression.
But, even with a hearty progressive foundation in place, the material from "Hogwash" has a hard time competing with 1970's "Thank Christ for the Bomb" or the conceptual "Split" album, which came out a year later.

I Asked for Water, She Gave Me...Gasoline is the second album of (mostly) acoustic blues stylings from Tony McPhee and some talented friends -- including Jo-Ann Kelly, Andy Fernbach, Graham Hines and Brett Marvin. The overall effect, at times, is one of the "blackest"-sounding blues albums ever generated by white Englishmen (and Englishwomen). This is distinctly a late-'60s record at times, in sound and intent, but that's not a problem when you're dealing with talent this prodigious, because it's all honest and unaffected. Details

SBE play classic stoner rock, with a strong sixties/seventies psychedelic vibe, that is a positive joy to hear looping out of your speakers and filling the room. Somehow SBE seem to make a well worn genre seem fresh and powerful. There is nothing particularly new here, but who cares? It sounds fucking great. If these two tracks are anything to go by then SBE cook like a manic depressive master chef on crystal meth.
